I had the great opportunity to be raised in a U.S. Navy family then attend the University of Florida (B.S. in Geology, 1980) and the University of Wyoming (M.S. in Geology/Geophysics, 1983). After working in the environmental consulting industry, I earned my law degree from the University of Pittsburgh (1993) and worked as a project manager for several environmental remediation companies managing large remediation projects throughout the U.S.
In 1997, my family and I moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Greensboro, North Carolina and I later became the in-house counsel for a North Carolina environmental remediation company. In 2002, another talented attorney and I started a law firm that thrived for ten years. Between 2012 and 2022, I owned and operated two law firms that provided high quality representation and counsel to businesses and individuals.
In 2022, my fortune improved again as I am able to represent and counsel several businesses as fractional General Counsel.
I also volunteer as a Guardian ad Litem for neglected and abused children and as a swim instructor at the local YMCA as well as try to keep up with my age group in triathlons.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” - Albert Einstein
As a company grows, merges, changes, etc. it often has the need for legal assistance and counsel from a licensed, experienced attorney. If a long-term, full-time need exists, the company will likely hire an attorney as an employee in-house counsel. Often times; however, the need is short-term (mergers, acquisitions, special projects, etc.) or it is a part-time need - in those situations, the company will likely contract with an attorney as an independent contractor fractional general counsel.
As a fractional general counsel, I'm an independent contractor and work with several non-competing companies on a part-time and/or set duration basis. I work out of my office and/or the company's offices and/or remotely - as agreed upon between me and the company.
Depending on the company, my work includes legal representation and counsel in matters involving employees, strategic planning, regulatory compliance, contract review, negotiation, dispute resolution/litigation and other matters.
After working with one business as an employee in-house counsel for several years and then with numerous businesses as a law firm attorney for over 20 years, I know that an attorney must understand the company to provide effective and cost-efficient legal representation. As fractional general counsel, I have the opportunity to get to know the company so that I can provide high-quality and effective representation and counsel.
I strongly believe that a fractional General Counsel should be paid on a monthly fee basis with the understanding that the monthly fee may change depending on the company's needs. In addition, the representation agreement should be easily terminated if the company no longer needs my services.
As to what that monthly fee would be - that would depend on the company's expectations and is something we would agree to up front.
If your company has a need for an experienced business attorney licensed in North Carolina on a part-time and/or short-term basis, please contact me. We'll discuss your company's needs and whether I can assist.
